Alex Eala Makes Wimbledon History, Sets Up Blockbuster Clash with Iga Swiatek

Alex Eala has written her name into tennis history books, becoming the first Filipino player in the Open Era to reach the third round of a Grand Slam singles tournament following a gritty comeback win at Wimbledon on Thursday.

The 21-year-old, seeded 29th, recovered from a shaky opening set to beat Australia’s Maya Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 on Court Three, where hundreds of Filipino fans packed the stands waving flags and cheering throughout the nearly two-hour battle. The win also carried a personal edge, avenging her painful defeat to Joint in last year’s Eastbourne final, a loss that Eala admitted had stayed with her for months afterward.

Eala struggled early, trailing 4-3 in the first set before Joint pulled away to close it out. But the Filipina flipped the match on its head in the second and third sets, breaking Joint’s serve repeatedly and closing out a flawless final set to seal the victory. Speaking courtside afterward, Eala said the atmosphere had been electric and respectful, adding that she felt it was everything she could have hoped for.

The result sets up a mouthwatering third-round clash against defending Wimbledon champion and world number one Iga Swiatek on Saturday. The pair share a growing rivalry: Eala stunned Swiatek during the quarterfinals of the 2025 Miami Open, before the Polish star exacted revenge in a rematch in Madrid weeks later.

Eala also addressed concerns among fans after appearing on court with heavy strapping on her right leg, confirming the bandaging was purely precautionary and that she was not carrying any injury.

Beyond the scoreline, the win carries deep significance for Philippine sport. The country, the world’s 12th most populous, has had few global female sporting icons in recent years, with boxing legend Manny Pacquiao and gymnast Carlos Yulo largely carrying that mantle on the international stage. Eala’s team and family were seen wearing shirts featuring the sampaguita, the national flower of the Philippines, while Eala herself wore a Tagalog phrase embroidered on her visor, translating roughly to “once it grows, it cannot be stopped.”

Eala enters the third round in the form of her career, having also reached the third round at Indian Wells and the Italian Open earlier this season, along with a run to the Berlin quarterfinals as a wildcard, where she beat world number two Elena Rybakina. Her rise has been dramatic; she had won just a single match across her previous five Grand Slam appearances before this week’s breakthrough.

The Philippines will now watch closely on Saturday as Eala looks to add another chapter to a season that has already redefined what’s possible for Filipino tennis on the world stage.
