Penélope Cruz recently recalled experiencing a frightening plane emergency with longtime friend Salma Hayek while the pair were dressed in Halloween clown costumes.
Academy Award-winning actress Penélope Cruz has shared details of a frightening in-flight emergency she experienced alongside longtime friend Salma Hayek, revealing that the pair were dressed in full clown costumes when the incident unfolded.
The actress recounted the unusual story during an appearance on the latest episode of Hot Ones, where she reflected on her decades-long friendship with Hayek and described the incident as one of their most memorable experiences together.
Calling Hayek “another sister for me,” Cruz said the incident occurred on Halloween while the two actresses and a group of friends were traveling on an airplane wearing clown wigs and costumes.
“I don’t like clowns. They are scary no matter what,” Cruz joked during the interview.
According to the actress, the flight took an alarming turn when the crew announced an emergency.
“Imagine, 10 of us were dressed like clowns,” Cruz said. “And then the pilot said, ‘Oxygen masks! We’re having a depressurization of the cabin.'”

The actress recalled the chaotic moments that followed, saying flight attendants rushed through the cabin carrying oxygen equipment as passengers dealt with the unexpected emergency.
Despite the frightening situation, the plane landed safely and no injuries were reported.
“We were very lucky, we landed safely,” Cruz said. “But that was such a crazy bonding experience.”
The story, however, did not end there.
Cruz revealed that she and Hayek had to board another flight shortly afterward because they were scheduled to begin filming within hours. The pair reportedly remained in their clown outfits during the journey.
“Of course we were late on set,” she said. “But alive.”
The anecdote offered another glimpse into the close friendship shared by the two actresses, who first became close while filming the 2006 action-comedy Bandidas.
Over the years, both stars have frequently spoken about their strong bond and support for one another.
In an earlier television appearance, Cruz recalled arriving in Los Angeles and barely knowing anyone in the city before Hayek welcomed her into her home.

According to Cruz, Hayek insisted she stay with her rather than at a hotel, helping her navigate the challenges of being new to Hollywood.
The friendship has since become one of the entertainment industry’s most enduring relationships, with the pair often attending events together and publicly celebrating each other’s achievements.
Cruz is currently promoting her latest film, The Invite, an A24 comedy in which she stars alongside Seth Rogen and Edward Norton. The film, directed by Olivia Wilde, follows two neighboring couples whose dinner gathering takes an unexpected turn.
The actress also has several high-profile projects in the pipeline, including La Bola Negra (The Black Ball), Day Drinker opposite Johnny Depp, Bunker alongside husband Javier Bardem and an upcoming film from director Nancy Meyers.
