Love was in the air—but so were multiple criminal charges. Russian daredevils Ivan Beerkus and Angela Nikolau were arrested after scaling the Empire State Building for a risky proposal.
Two Russian urban explorers who climbed to the top of New York City’s Empire State Building, unfurled a peace banner and became engaged on the building’s spire are expected to appear in court on Thursday after being arrested over the dramatic stunt that captured global attention.
The couple, identified by authorities as Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, also known online as Ivan Beerkus, allegedly scaled the iconic skyscraper’s antenna on Wednesday before descending and being taken into custody by the New York Police Department.
Videos and aerial footage circulated widely on social media showed the pair, dressed in dark clothing, standing atop the 1,454-foot structure and displaying a black banner bearing the message: “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”
Moments later, Kuznetsov appeared to propose to Nikolau on a broader section of the antenna. The proposal was accepted before the pair were escorted away by police officers.
According to the NYPD, both individuals face multiple charges, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, criminal tampering, disorderly conduct, possession of burglar’s tools and violation of a local law.
The couple spent the night in custody at Manhattan’s criminal court complex and were expected to appear before a judge on Thursday as prosecutors finalized the criminal complaint.
Authorities have launched an investigation into how the pair managed to bypass the Empire State Building’s security measures and gain access to one of the world’s most heavily protected landmarks.
Police and building security officials are reviewing surveillance footage to determine how the couple entered restricted areas and evaded screening procedures.
Officials familiar with the investigation believe the pair may have observed employee movements and potentially used a worker entrance to reach restricted sections of the building.
The Empire State Building, one of New York’s most visited tourist attractions, tightened its security protocols following previous incidents involving trespassers attempting to access the spire for photographs and social media content.

A spokesperson for the building condemned the breach and noted that the observation deck can be legally rented for proposals, including a premium package reportedly costing around $1,000.
Despite the security concerns raised by the incident, authorities said there were no reports of injuries and that no visitors or tenants of the building were placed in immediate danger.

Nikolau and Kuznetsov are internationally known in the urban exploration community, often referred to as “rooftoppers,” individuals who scale skyscrapers and other high structures without authorization.
The pair began undertaking climbs together nearly a decade ago and developed a significant following online by documenting their high-risk adventures.
Their exploits gained wider international recognition through the 2024 Netflix documentary “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” which followed several of their ascents around the world, including climbs of Malaysia’s Merdeka 118 tower and China’s unfinished Goldin Finance 117 skyscraper.
Earlier this year, Nikolau reportedly said that the couple had relocated from Moscow to New Jersey.
The latest incident has reignited debates over social media-fueled stunt culture and the lengths to which influencers and urban explorers are willing to go in pursuit of viral moments and online engagement.
Security experts have also questioned how two experienced climbers managed to reach the top of one of America’s most recognizable buildings despite decades of enhanced security measures introduced after the September 11 attacks.
The banner displayed during the climb also attracted attention online because of its political message. The phrase, “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace,” is frequently misattributed to musician Jimi Hendrix, though historians have linked variations of the quote to nineteenth-century British statesman William Gladstone.
Meanwhile, the couple’s families appeared largely unfazed by the incident. Russian media reports quoted Nikolau’s father, Dmitriy Nikolau, a circus performer, as saying that climbing rooftops felt “normal” and that he was not worried about his daughter’s arrest.
The dramatic proposal and subsequent arrests quickly became one of the most discussed stories on social media, with users divided between admiration for the couple’s daring feat and criticism of the security breach and potential risks posed by the stunt.
As the pair prepare to face a judge in Manhattan, authorities continue to investigate how the climbers gained access to the restricted areas of the Empire State Building and whether additional security measures will be introduced following the unprecedented breach.
